Patria will sell its Sastamala ammunition production facility to Lapua Oy. With this contract in effect, the production of heavy ammunition components will continue in Sastamala. Nammo will take ownership of the Sastamala production facility, providing employment to a substantial proportion of the personnel now engaged in production.

The Sastamala facility is the only plant in Finland capable of carrying out the early phases in the production process of steel projectile casings (principally 155mm artillery ordnance), which comprises the pressing and heat treatment of projectile casing blanks.  The Sastamala plant is also capable of completing the other phases in projectile casing production and manufacture mortar shells.

This deal is one of the elements in an agreement struck between Finland, Sweden and Norway, known as the Nammo contract, which will transfer some of the ammunition production to Nammo.

“We have found the solution we were looking for to continue ammunition production in Finland. As a company specialising in ammunition production, Nammo will stand a good chance of continuing production. The company's strengths include a strong expertise, a wide range of projectile casings and a large network of international distributors,” says Mika Kari, Patria's President for Land business unit.

“The Sastamala production facility fits well with Nammo's ammunition offering, ensuring that Finland will have continued know-how in ammunition production. This contract will give Nammo a more prominent role in Finland's security of supply, both under normal and exceptional conditions,” says Erkki Mäkelä, Site Manager at Nammo.
