The SecD-Day 2025 event brought together security and defense professionals at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre at the end of January. Patria's exhibition booth was crowded with visitors throughout the two-day event.
One of the main attractions was Patria's armored vehicles. Toni Töyrylä, the product manager for Patria 6x6 vehicles, mentioned that Patria's products are already well-known in Europe. This is due to the success of AMV vehicles in international markets over the past two decades.
The orders and rapid growth of the order book for Patria 6x6 vehicles have not gone unnoticed by defense professionals either.
– The general topic of discussion at the fair has been the publicly known deals and potential new opportunities. Visitors' questions often relate to the different variants and technical details available for the vehicles, Töyrylä noted.
The new Patria TREMOS mortar system attracted interest
Patria's trainer Tommi Hakala was responsible for presenting the Patria AMV vehicle. He mentioned that many have seen pictures of Patria's vehicles and want to see them in person at the fair.
– Discussions often highlight the excellent mobility and modularity of the AMV, which allows the vehicle to be customized according to customer requirements and, for example, integrate desired weapon systems, Hakala mentioned.
The new Patria TREMOS also attracted interested visitors. It is a new mortar system unveiled by Patria in October, which is a durable and cost-effective way to improve the mobility and accuracy of a traditional mortar.
– Thanks to the recoil damping technology developed by Patria, TREMOS can be integrated into different types of vehicles. Many visitors to the booth are interested in this, said Mika Nygård, the product manager for Patria TREMOS.
Patria's drones at the fair for the first time
Patria also showcased its advanced command, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems at its booth. For the first time, drones were also included. Last year, Patria acquired Nordic Drones, a leading manufacturer of professional drone systems, whose products can be integrated into indirect fire control systems, for example.
Patria's drone specialist Eemil Sihvonen mentioned that the most common questions about drones relate to flight time and the amount and quality of payload.
– The strength of Patria's products in this size class of quadrotor drones is good performance in both flight time and payload, Sihvonen noted.
Accelerating the development of European defense
SecD-Day is the largest defense and security conference and trade fair event organized in the Nordic countries to date. The event program was organized by the Finnish Defense and Aerospace Industry Association (PIA). The conference sessions of SecD-Day addressed current challenges and technological solutions in the field.
The overarching theme of the program was "There is no Security without Industry." Jussi Järvinen, head of Patria's Finland division, presented the FAMOUS and CAVS development projects, which are carried out as international cooperation and in which Finland and Patria are strongly involved.
Patria's CEO Esa Rautalinko took part in a panel discussion on the development of European defense, which has been a hot topic since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine.
– We are moving in a better direction in terms of increasing defense readiness, but in many countries, the necessary political decisions are still delayed. They should be expedited, Rautalinko assessed. According to him, in many countries, the situation is now even worse than before the start of Russia's war of aggression. This is because the defense supplies sent to Ukraine have depleted stocks that have not been replenished at the same pace.
The defense industry needs binding procurement decisions
Esa Rautalinko stated that the European countries closest to Russia have best understood the importance of strengthening defense capacity.
– In addition to Finland and Norway, Sweden, the Baltic countries, and Poland have now started to develop their defense systematically. Rautalinko pointed out that without binding procurement decisions and a long-term perspective, the capital-intensive defense industry will not increase its production to the level required for a broader improvement in the security situation.
Rautalinko also emphasized the importance of cooperation in the development of European defense and the defense industry. This is needed both within the country and among allied countries.
– Finland is a good example of seamless cooperation between the defense administration, the defense forces, and the defense industry. In many other countries, such cooperation does not exist.
The popular event will continue in 2027
SecD-Day was first held in Helsinki in the spring of 2023. The event was well received even then, but this year the event reached entirely new dimensions at the Exhibition and Convention Centre. The sold-out exhibition space included 190 Finnish and international companies.
– This is an excellent and, for many Finnish companies, the only place to market their products and services to defense industry supply chains. The key thing is to meet current and potential customers from Finland and nearby areas, said Tuija Karanko, Secretary General of PIA. She believes that SecD-Day has all the potential to grow into a significant event even for the entire Northern European region.
– This year, the goal was to grow the event and then focus on internationalization in the next event to be held in 2027. However, delegations from different countries and other international visitors have already been pleasantly present, Karanko noted.
